What do I need to know about Football Betting?
What is NFL Spread Betting?
To set a point spread, bookmakers decide who will be the favored team in a given game. They’ll allocate a set number of points against the favorite, which they must cover. The underdog receives a head start using the same set number. In order for you to win (or cover the spread), they must win by more points than the amount set by the bookmakers.
How does the point spread work?
In the example below, the Raiders are the favorite. The minus sign always denotes the favorite, and the plus sign denotes the underdog. For Oakland to cover 3.5 points, they have to win by four or more. So in this example, if you bet on the Raiders, they need to win by at least four points to cover the spread.
However, if you bet the Patriots, they can lose by three, two or one point, or win the game outright, and you win your bet.
Your payout is determined by the moneyline odds attached to the point spread. A negative number (such as -110) shows how much money you must wager to win $100, while a positive number (like +110) shows how much money you will win on a $100 wager.
Typically, the odds given on the spread are -110 unless otherwise noted, like above. If one side is receiving a lot of action, bookmakers may adjust the lines accordingly in an effort to balance the action.
What’s a push?
Sometimes bookmakers will set the line on an even number like 3, 6 or even 10. In cases like these, if the favored team wins by the exact amount set for the spread, the bet would be considered a push and your risk amount would be returned. For example, if the Los Angeles Chargers were 7-point favorites and they won by a touchdown (seven points), any wager on the Chargers at -7 would result in a push.
Moneyline Betting
To make a moneyline wager, all you have to do is pick the team you believe will win the game. Bookmakers will set the lines on each team. The favorites will be represented with lower odds while the underdogs will be given higher odds. For example, you may see something such as this:
New England Patriots -150
Los Angeles Rams +125
When betting on the moneyline, it’s important to remember that the favored team’s odds (-150) represent the amount you must wager in order to win $100. As for the underdog, their odds (+125) represent the amount you win if you wager $100.
What is a NFL Total bet?
The total, also known as over/under, involves betting on the total number of points scored by both teams combined in an NFL game. Bookmakers will set a total number of points for any given NFL game and you decide if the score will be more or less (go over or under) that amount.
How does betting on the total work?
Here’s an example of a typical NFL totals line:
New York Giants vs Pittsburgh Steelers
Over (+130)/ Under (-115) 45 points
If you bet the over, you believe that the final score will be above 45, which means 46 or more points. If you bet the under, you believe the final, combined score will be 44 points or less.
What happens if the final score is exactly the same as the total?
In many cases, you’ll notice that a total ends in “.5”, which means that you’ll have a definite result that would look like this:
New York Giants vs Pittsburgh Steelers
Over (+130)/ Under (-115) 45.5 points
Games can’t end on a half-number, so it will either definitively be over or under the set total. The half-point eliminates the possibility of a push occurring. Therefore, the bet can only be won or lost. However, sometimes bookmakers set the total as a whole number, such as in our first example. When that’s the case and the final score is exactly the same as that total, then the bet results in a push.
As always, how much you stand to win is determined by the moneyline odds attached to the over or under.
Why do I see a moneyline/point spread for a game, but I don’t see a total?
Sometimes the bookmakers will wait closer to game time to post the total for a number of reasons. Usually, if there’s a moneyline and/or a point spread posted but no total. It likely indicates that weather is a factor. In other words, there could be potential for a snow storm or something of that nature, and that would have a serious impact on the total. In other cases, an injury might be a factor as to why you don’t see the total posted. Until those unpredictable factors are a little more certain, the line may be off the board.
What is NFL Prop Betting?
A prop bet is a wager that has no direct relationship to the outcome or final score of a single NFL game. They typically come in the form of player or team prop bets, but during events like the Super Bowl, you’ll see fun props on the coin toss and the length of the National Anthem, among others.
What’s the difference between player and team props?
The difference between player and team props is that they refer to either individuals or to the whole team.
NFL Team Props
Odds to Win the Division: This prop is a futures bet that allows you to pick who you believe will win any given division. Here’s an example of what that would look like:
Odds to win the 2017 AFC West Division
Kansas City Chiefs +190
Oakland Raiders +200
Denver Broncos +200
Los Angeles Chargers +650
As you can see, the Kansas City Chiefs are favored to win the AFC West and the Los Angeles Chargers are considered long shots. If you were to wager $100 on the Chiefs to win the division and they do, you would receive a total payout of $290, which includes your $100 risk amount.
Regular Season Win Totals: In effect, this is a totals prop and you have the chance to bet the over or under on a given team’s total number of wins during the regular season. For example, the Washington Redskins have their regular season win total set at 8.5 games. You can bet that the Colts will win nine games or more (over) or that they’ll win eight games or less (under).
NFL Player Props
MVP and Rookie of the Year Props: Bookmakers will set a line that includes the NFL players who are most likely to win the NFL MVP Award and even the Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the Year Awards. A list will be provided by the sportsbook, which contains the players and their respective odds. You will also have the option to bet “the field”, which is a line that includes every player not on the list.
Individual Game Performances: Once the NFL season begins, bookmakers will provide a list of individual player props and odds on different outcomes during each NFL game. Here’s an example:
How many touchdowns will Tom Brady throw? 2.5 Over -115 /Under -105
Here, you have the option of betting that Brady will throw more or less than three touchdowns (since you can’t throw 2.5 touchdowns) in the game.

Are there other types of props?
The Super Bowl is famous for many reasons, but in the world of NFL betting, it’s because of the wide variety of prop bets on offer. You have the option to choose from the props you see throughout the NFL season, but you can also bet on off-the-field events like the outcome of the coin toss (heads or tails) or the length of the National Anthem to name a few. There’s even a prop bet on the color of the Gatorade that’s poured on the Super Bowl winning coach.
What is a Parlay Bet?
The parlay wager is a popular bet among many in the NFL wagering world as it offers a little more bang for your buck than a straight wager. Each individual bet in your parlay is linked together, so in order to win your entire parlay wager, all legs of your parlay (each outcome you’ve selected to bet on) must win.
How does a parlay work?
Let’s say the New York Jets (-3) are playing the Philadelphia Eagles and at the same time, the New England Patriots (-8) are playing the Miami Dolphins, and Minnesota Vikings are playing the Green Bay Packers (-7). You’ve done your research and believe the Jets, Patriots and Packers will cover their respective spreads. Instead of placing three single bets, you can place a parlay. If you’re right about all of the games, you’ll win. However, if one of the teams fails to cover, you’ll lose.
If one of your legs resulted in a tie, such as the Jets only winning their game by three points, then don’t worry; your wager isn’t a loss. That portion of your parlay will be graded as a push and your parlay will reduce to a two-team parlay.
If you have a parlay that gets reduced all the way down to one team because the other picks result in a push, the parlay will stand as a single wager and have action accordingly.
Can I parlay events from different sports?
Yes, parlaying events from multiple sports is allowed. It’s a common strategy among advanced bettors. You can parlay anywhere from two to 12 events in a single parlay, which can cover anything from MLB games, NFL spreads, NHL, or NBA games. The most popular to combine with NFL games are college football games.
How do I calculate the payout for my parlay?
Log into your account and as you make your selections, you’ll see them being added to the bet slip. You’ll find the potential payout is automatically tallied for you right there.
What is a NFL Teaser Bet?
A teaser bet is comprised of two or more straight bets that are combined into one bet. The number of points offered on each individual line will then be adjusted in your favor. The three main types of NFL teaser are: 6, 6.5 and 7-point teasers. You can also place a sweetheart teaser, which offers you the option to tease a line by 10 or 13 points. In order for you to win this teaser bet, all the outcomes must be correct.
How do teasers work?
Let’s say you are playing are a two-team, six-point teaser, such as below:
Buffalo Bills +6.5
New England Patriots -6.5
San Francisco 49ers +3
Seattle Seahawks -3
That means you can shift the line in your favor by six points on both bets. So in this case, if you want to bet New England and Seattle, you will get the Patriots at -0.5 (six points in your favor) instead of -6.5 and the Seahawks at +3 instead of -3. As you can see, you’re improving your chances of winning significantly. Conversely, you could also take the Bills at +12.5 or the 49ers +9. In any case, it’s a parlay, so both bets have to win, but you have improved your chances of winning by using a teaser.
In addition to teaser betting on the point spread, you can also place a teaser on the total (over/under) of any given NFL game. Let’s say the total for the Steelers and Browns game is set at 45 and the line for the Colts and Titans game is 52. You want to take the under in the Steelers game and the over in the Colts game. In a teaser bet, the line always moves in your favor, so in a 7-point teaser using the lines above, the under bet on the Steelers game goes from 45 to 52 and the over bet on the Colts game goes from 52 to 45. Therefore, in order to win the wager, the Steelers and Browns have to score less than 52 points combined (as opposed to less than 45 points) and the Colts and Titans have to score more than 45 points combined as (opposed to more than 52 points).
What if I push in a teaser, what happens to the other games?
If you have a three-game teaser and there’s a push, then it becomes a two-team teaser, and the odds adjust accordingly. Keep in mind that a push in a two-team teaser simply becomes an overall push. That’s because you’re shifting the point spread around in your favor, and you can’t solely get that benefit for just one game.
What is a sweetheart teaser?
A sweetheart teaser for the most part plays out the same way as a regular teaser, except a sweetheart gives the bettors even more points. You can shift the line by 10 to 13 points in football; that’s nearly two touchdowns. There are a couple of differences. While regular teasers can include up to 10 teams, a sweetheart can only include either three or four teams. Also, if any of your selections push on a sweetheart, you lose the entire bet.

Bookmakers attract players with all kinds of bonuses but an average bettor usually never read the rules. To win those bonuses he needs to understand their requirements and set the right strategy. Today I will explain how you can win a bonus at Bovada.
Bovada is one of the most trusted brands in sports betting world and it is especially attractive for US players.

- Step one: Open account
- Step Two: Make a deposit and instantly receive a 50% bonus up to $250
- Requirements: Rollover is 5X Sports/5X Horses/30X Casino
HOW TO WIN THIS BONUS?
First of all you should be patient, because if you make a withdrawal before you met this criteria all your bonus and winnings from bonus will be fortified.
- Make a Deposit of $250.00
- Received Bonus $125.00 – (This is the money Bovada will add to your account balance)
- Your account balance after bonus $375.00 – This is the balance after you receive your bonus
- Roll-over requirements $2,062.50 – (The rule is clear: Rollover is 5X Sports/5X Horses/30X Casino on both the initial deposit and the bonus amount. Rollover in Sportsbook, for winning wagers, will be determined by the lesser of your risk or win amount at the time of wager settlement; for losing wagers your risk amount will be credited to your rollover contribution.). The formula for rollover is 5*$375*1.1. If you bet on a game with probability of 50% on their odds and their juice, you will risk $10 to win $9. If you win your roll-over is $9. If you lose your “roll-over” is $10. This is why I multiply with 1.1 to adjust the rollover number.
- Recommended stake (2%) $7.50 – (This is my recommended stake and it can be 1%, but you will need more time to complete this task. 2% is max play I recommend)
- Estimated No of bets 275 – (This is estimated number of bets you will need to make if you will bet $7.5 on every single game, which is exactly 2% of your account balance after you receive your bonus)
- Odds (-110) 1.91 – (Those are their odds on spreads and the totals. I took -110 for my calculations)
How to win this bonus?
In the table above we have different winning percentages and the profit including bonus, after you roll-over 5 times.
How To Win On Bovada Poker
Here is my 3 Month plan:
How To Win On Bovada Poker
- Make around 275 bets with $2.75 per play.
- Hit at least 50% of games, because if your record will be 49% you will not make a profit, despite they give you $125 of bonus.
Skilled bettor or lucky bettor?
How To Win On Bovada

Most bettors are not skilled bettors, this is why 98% of them lose on the long run. However, here we can be little bit more optimistic, because even if you are not skilled bettor and if you blindly bet on games, that have 50% of chance (in this case Bovada odds -110), then you can expect 50% result on the long run. And as you see, record of 50% will make some benefit from taking this bonus.
How To Win Money On Bovada
I would recommend:
